The Heart of Yoga
Where does the desire to deepen your yoga practice come from? Self-improvement, healing, reducing stress, strengthening body and mind, transcending life's challenges and struggles are commonly cited as reasons to deepen a practice of yoga. All are valid reasons to consider yoga as a powerful tool for managing daily life, both "on the mat" and "off the mat".
Classical Yoga can be a pathway to integrating a mind-body-spirit practice using tools that explore the depth and breadth of yoga. A sincere willingness to open your heart and mind is all the experience that you will need to participate in this yoga retreat.
During this retreat we will explore the ancient knowledge and philosophy of yoga as outlined by Patanjali ,including the study of the Yamas (restraints of behaviors) and Niyamas (observances of positive behaviors), breathing practices (pranayama), yoga postures (asanas), sensory mastery (pratyahara), and the concentration (dharana) that leads to meditation (dhyana). In addition there will be an introduction to the chakras, the kleshas, gunas and the 5 Branches of Yoga. There will be time to practice, to learn and to "just be", all while surrounded by the magnificence of the ocean and the natural beauty of Whitehead Light Station Island.
Upon registration for this retreat you will be asked to provide a brief description of your current yoga practice, a description of any physical considerations or modifications needed and your intention for attending a yoga retreat. If you have any questions regarding the teachings you may contact Lily Sibley at lily@oceanspirityoga.com.
Instructor Profile: Lily Sibley
Lily Sibley, owner of Ocean Spirit Yoga in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, has been teaching yoga since 2002. Lily has advanced certification as a Classical Yoga teacher, is a certified Reiki Master and a licensed teacher of Healthy-Steps (formally The Lebed Method), a movement therapy program for breast cancer survivors and those with chronic illness. Lily is a senior teacher in the YogaLife Institute of NH yoga teacher training program, a program born of the Yoga Institute of Mumbai, India. Ocean Spirit Yoga offers yoga classes, workshops, retreats, meditation classes, classes for rehabilitation and wellness, and private yoga classes.
While introducing her students to the physical and mental benefits of a regular yoga practice, Lily encourages her students to be comfortable with their individual levels of ability. Her students are further encouraged to "take their yoga off the mat" -- to create harmony and a sense of well being in their lives. While building strength and flexibility in their bodies, Lily's students discover the stillness and peace that lies within. Using classical texts, such as the Bhagavagita, the Upanishads, the Yoga Sutras, the Tao Te Ching, as tools for discussion, students learn to live in the ups and downs of a fully integrated life.
