Writing a Personal Essay: A Writing Workshop with Linda Buckmaster

There is nothing like an island for writing. Come to Whitehead Island, located in the Mussel Ridge Channel at the entrance to Penobscot Bay, to explore, write, and relax at a classic Maine island light station. Maine islands have a long tradition of inspiring writers of all kinds and Whitehead is a special place for inspiration.

The personal essay has been undergoing a resurgence of interest and experimentation in recent decades. The options are exciting. Whatever your topic—memoir, historical, environmental, or something else—you will discover what you want to say and how to say it.

For inspiration and craft, we will read a variety of essayists and look at how they use the writer's toolkit of image, voice, language, narration, and structure, and consider how we might use them in our own writing. We will write in response to writing prompts and activities. Whether you are a beginner or a published author, this class will be fun and will help you move your writing to the next level.

We will write in plein air among the nooks and crannies of the island and in cozy spots in the Lightkeeper's House. Class size is limited to 14.
